Why I do this
Founder & instructor
I started teaching in 1997 because I kept meeting the same person: someone who had worked hard, saved carefully, ended up owning a handful of investments, and had never once been taught how any of it worked. They were not foolish. Nobody had ever explained it to them.
That is still who I write for. My students are not day traders and they are not finance professionals. They are people approaching retirement, people who want to understand what is in their accounts, and people who are tired of nodding along to jargon.
Since then I have taught more than 100,000+ people, and I have written course material for organisations across the financial industry. But the job has not changed: take something that is genuinely complicated and explain it in a way that makes sense the first time.
How I teach
Plain English, and I mean it
No jargon that has not been explained first. Junior-high reading level, on purpose. If a sentence needs a glossary, I have written it badly.
Both halves of every strategy
Most explanations of a strategy tell you what you gain. I will always also tell you what it costs and where it goes wrong. A student who only knows the upside has not been taught, they have been sold to.
I show my working
When we value a company, you will see every assumption, including the ones that change the answer most. A number without its assumptions is worthless, and handing you one would make you dependent on me rather than capable yourself.
Slowly, and more than once
The lessons are short and you can read them in any order, as many times as you want. I would rather you understood four things properly than skimmed forty.
What I will not do
This part is as important as the rest, so I would rather say it plainly.
- I will not tell you what to buy. I am not registered to, and I would be wrong to.
- I will not manage your money or place trades for you. I have no access to your account and never will.
- I will not promise you a result. I do not know what the market will do and neither does anyone selling you certainty.
- I will not pretend investing is easy or risk-free. You can lose money doing this, including all of it.
What I will do is teach you how to think a decision through, so that when you make it, it is yours — and you know why.
One more thing
Every dollar of profit from the trades we place in our live teaching sessions is donated to charity. The classroom is for teaching, not for earning, and keeping those two things separate keeps me honest about why a trade is on the screen.
