TIJ The Investor’s Journey A stock market school for everyday investors

Free, for everyone

Money lessons for teenagers

Four short videos for 13 to 18 year olds, on the things school somehow never covers. No signup, no email address, no cost. Watch them here, or send them to someone who needs them.

Most people meet their first bank account, their first credit card and their first paycheque with no instruction whatsoever.

Then they spend a decade paying for that.

These are the four conversations I wish somebody had had with me at fifteen. They are taught the same way as everything else here — plain English, no jargon, no pretending it is more complicated than it is.

They are free and they will stay free. There is nothing to buy on this page.

The four lessons

Watch in order, or pick the one you need.

Lesson 1

Opening and using a bank account

What a checking account actually is, what a debit card really does to your balance, and why the number on the app is not always the number you have.

Lesson 2

What credit is, and how you get it

Credit is a reputation, not a pot of money. How yours starts, what builds it, and what quietly wrecks it before you are twenty.

Lesson 3

Managing money and making a plan

Where the money actually goes, how to budget without hating it, and why saving a small amount early beats saving a lot later.

Lesson 4

Buying your first share of stock

What owning a share of a company means, what happens when you press buy, and why the first one should be small.

For parents and teachers

You are welcome to use these however you like. Play them in a classroom, send the link to a fifteen year old who will pretend not to watch it, or sit down and go through them together.

There is no account to create and nothing is sold in them. If you would like the link to hand out, it is simply https://theinvestorsjourney.com/for-teens.

And a word to any teenager who found this on their own

Nobody expects you to be interested in bank accounts. That is fine.

But the person who understands this stuff at seventeen ends up with a decade's head start on the person who works it out at twenty-seven, and it is genuinely about an hour of your life.

Start with the first one.

Grown-ups: the rest of the school is over here.

If you are past the first-bank-account stage and want to understand what is actually in your investment accounts, the free lessons are the place to start — same plain English, aimed at adults.
